The Johann honors Dr. Johann Siegert, a surgeon who served in the Prussian Army during the war against Napoleon. He was later recruited to serve as the surgeon general for Simon Bolivar's revolutionary army in Venezuela. While stationed at the hospital in Angostura, he created a tincture of herbs and spices to treat stomach ailments. Angostura Bitters won a medal at the World's Fair in 1873 and became one of the most popular bitters in the world.
