Its moniker celebrates Anaxilaus of Thessaly, whose brandy recipe is the earliest known. Fun fact - Anaxilaus of Thessaly was a physician, and supposedly exiled from Rome in 28 BCE for practicing "magic." If brandy were to be considered magic today, we'd call ourselves magicians.
